Types of therapy I offer

Articulation

A child may be hard to understand because they don’t pronounce words correctly. This can happen for many reasons. Treatment of articulation may depend on the individual reasons for the mispronunciation. Articulation therapy will focus on treating articulation disorders in a way that is evidence based.

Stuttering

Per Stuttering Foundation, “Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations (lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds and syllables.” 

Stuttering therapy involves:

  • educating children and family members about stuttering.
  • addressing any bullying and negative feeling about stuttering.
  • reducing the child’s stutter/help them stutter easier.
  • improving overall communication.

Expressive language: A child may not be using age-appropriate vocabulary and/or grammar to express their ideas or wants/needs, to narrate a story or write an essay. Speech and Language therapy will address the aspects of language the evaluation indicated as areas of weakness.

Receptive language: A child may not understand what is being said to them due to poor comprehension of vocabulary and/or grammar. They may struggle to follow directions, answer questions or comprehend a classroom text. Here too Speech and Language therapy will address the aspects of language the evaluation indicated as areas of weakness.

 

What is teletherapy and is it right for my child?

Joys of Communication uses the Zoom platform to provide teletherapy virtually. Before the session, the client and the family will receive a secure Zoom link via e-mail. They will use it to log in to their therapy session from the comfort of their home. The Zoom platform has many features that will make the session engaging for your child, such as giving up remote control and annotation among others. 
 
While teletherapy is relatively new, evidence is emerging that for many children it is as effective as in-person therapy.(ASHA Perspectives,Volume 5)
 American Speech and Hearing Association supports use of teletherapy as means of delivering quality speech and language services. (ASHA)

Benefits of teletherapy:

  1. It is easier to have more frequent but shorter therapy sessions. In fact, for articulation more frequent but shorter sessions are more successful than longer but less frequent ones in improving outcome.
  2. The child will not be tired/distracted from the commute.
  3. You have more time for other important activities.
  4. You are more likely to make it to therapy because doing so is less work.
 
Having said that, for teletherapy to be successful, the client and the family must have the following:  
  1. quality internet connection and a computer/laptop.
  2. a good set of headphones with a microphone. This is especially important for articulation therapy. Ms. Akselrod will let you know more about this during the free consultation.
  3. a relatively quiet and comfortable place to do teletherapy where the child and family are not overly distracted.
  4. a caregiver who is present and involved in the therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. You will need to have a free consultation with Ms. Akselrod about your child’s needs.
  2. Ms. Akselrod will evaluate your child’s needs, so she knows exactly what to target in therapy.
  3. You and Ms. Akselrod will review the evaluation and potential treatment.
  4. You are ready to sign up for therapy!
  • For preschoolers and young elementary school students it may be simple teaching related to the target area, play structured to work on the target goal or discussion of preschool-level books. The parent may need to assist in play-based activities.
  • For older students, therapy may consist of teaching and literacy/comprehension based activities such reading/listening to a text, watching a video and summarizing/discussing/writing about it or practicing target sounds while reading/discussing it.

Currently only practicing in the state of Maryland.

Pre-school age to young adult.

Currently, services are private pay but a superbill can be provided for you to submit to insurance companies. Joys of Communication has applied for and is waiting to get the credential as a provider with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.

  • During therapy, coaching and consultation you will also be provided with activities you can do with your child at home.
